School-Friendly Bliss Balls

Bliss balls are an easy, healthy + tasty lunchbox addition, that pack a nutritional punch - what's not to love? However most pre-made bliss balls on the supermarket shelves, while full of healthy ingredients, are usually based on nuts which aren't always school-friendly.

So by popular demand, here's my go-to Bliss Ball recipe. It takes about 5 minutes to blend everything up, and then get your kids to roll their own.

These bliss balls use sunflower seeds instead of nuts, making them both allergy-friendly and more cost-effective, while still giving your kids a good boost of protein and fibre - and the variations are endless so have some fun playing around with flavours to find your family's favourite.

Ingredients:

This recipe uses simple, cost-effective ingredients that deliver great nutrition and flavour. This recipe makes 10 bliss balls:

  • Sunflower seeds (100g / 2/3 cup): These seeds are a budget-friendly source of healthy fats, protein, and vitamin E. Their mild flavour makes them perfect for kids who might be sensitive to stronger nutty tastes.

  • Desiccated coconut (100g / 1 cup) + extra for rolling: Coconut adds natural sweetness and texture. Using desiccated coconut keeps the balls light and chewy.

  • Rock It Fuel (1/2 cup / 60g): This is a key ingredient that adds flavour and boosts the nutritional profile. It’s designed to provide energy and sweetness without the sugar-crash.

  • Sea salt (a pinch): Just enough to enhance the flavours without overpowering the natural sweetness.

  • Coconut oil (60g / 3.5 tbsp): This oil helps bind the mixture and adds healthy fats. It also gives the bliss balls a smooth texture.

Step-by-Step Preparation:

Making these bliss balls is straightforward and quick. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Process the sunflower seeds: Add the seeds to a food processor and pulse until they break down into smaller pieces. This step helps create a base that holds together well.

  2. Add coconut and Rock It Fuel: Mix in the desiccated coconut and Rock It Fuel, then blend on low speed until the ingredients combine evenly.

  3. Incorporate coconut oil: Pour in the coconut oil and blend again on low until the mixture starts to clump together - it should look like wet sand.

  4. Form the balls: Scoop tablespoons of the mixture and roll them into balls with your hands.

  5. Roll in extra coconut: If you have the patience, roll each ball in extra desiccated coconut for a nice finish.

  6. Chill: Place the bliss balls in the refrigerator until they firm up, about 30 minutes.

Mix it Up!

One of the best things about this recipe is how adaptable it is. You can tailor it to suit your family’s tastes and dietary needs:

  • Swap sunflower seeds for nuts: If nuts are allowed at school, almonds, cashews, or macadamias work well and add different flavours and textures.

  • Use shredded or flaked coconut: These can be added with the seeds and pulsed to break down before mixing in the other ingredients.

  • Try different oils: Coconut oil is great, but you can experiment with butter, ghee, macadamia oil, or avocado oil. Add the oil slowly to avoid making the mixture too wet.

  • Add seeds for crunch: Chia seeds, hemp seeds, or activated buckwheat kernels can boost nutrition and add texture. Blend chia seeds with the sunflower seeds first (so they don't get stuck in your teeth), but add buckwheat kernels at the end to keep their crunch.

  • Enhance flavours: Vanilla essence or food-grade essential oils like peppermint or orange can add a boost of flavour.

  • Include dried fruit: Cranberries or sour cherries add sweetness and a touch of tartness.

  • Make into a slice: To change things up even more, sometimes I press the mixture into a small container to make a slice, and if I'm feeling really fancy, a drizzle of dark chocolate over the top takes it next level!

  • Allergy-friendly options: Using sunflower seeds instead of nuts makes this recipe suitable for schools with nut restrictions.

  • Cost-effective: The ingredients are affordable and readily available, making this a budget-friendly snack option.

  • Customisable: You can adjust the recipe to suit dietary preferences or restrictions, including gluten-free and dairy-free options.

Tips for Making the Best Bliss Balls

To get the best results, keep these tips in mind:

  • The "Wet Sand" Test: If the mixture feels too dry to roll, add an extra teaspoon of coconut oil. If it’s too oily, add a tablespoon of extra coconut.

  • Wet Your Hands: If the mixture is sticking to your palms while rolling, lightly dampen your hands with water.

  • Pulse, Don't Puree: Pulse the seeds carefully—you want them broken down into a fine crumb, but not turned into "sunflower butter" before you add the other ingredients!

  • Get creative: Involve kids in choosing mix-ins or flavours to make snack time more fun.

  • Chill well: Refrigerating the balls helps them firm up and improves their texture.

  • Store properly: Keep the bliss balls in an airtight container in the fridge. They last for up to a week, or you can freeze them for longer storage.

And if you've run out of Rock it Fuel?

Then you'd better order some more! But in the meantime, you can follow this recipe instead:

  • Sunflower seeds (100g / 2/3 cup)

  • Desiccated coconut (100g / 1 cup) + extra for rolling:

  • Dried Dates (1/3 cup / 60g): You can use pitted dates or medjool dates - whatever you have on hand.

  • Raw Cacao Powder (2 tbsp): Not essential if you're playing around with other add-ins

  • Protein Powder (2 tbsp): Your choice! Try collagen, hemp, whey or whatever you have on hand. If it's flavoured, you may need to adjust the other ingredients for sweetness.

  • Sea salt (a pinch)

  • Coconut oil (50g / 3.5 tbsp): Or for other healthy fat options - see above.

Pulse the sunflower seeds + dates in a food processor until broken down but still a little bit chunky. Add remaining ingredients + blend until the mixture resembles chunky wet sand. Roll tablespoon-sized scoops into balls, then roll in dessicated coconut (if you can be bothered!) and refrigerate for 30mins or until firm.
